Milo Fine on Emanem CDs

MILO FINE FREE JAZZ ENSEMBLE "Earlier Outbreaks of Iconoclasm" (1976-8) EMANEM 5206 2-CD set

Three early recordings by the long lasting duo of Milo Fine (clarinet, percussion and piano) and Steve Gnitka (electric guitar). The first two sessions, HAH! from 1976 and THE CONSTANT EXTENSION OF INESCAPABLE TRADITION from 1977, were issued on two hat Hut LPs (with two tracks missing). The third, WHEN I WAS FIVE YEARS OLD, I PREDICTED YOUR WHOLE LIFE from 1978, was scheduled to appear on Horo, but that label went bust before it happened, so this material is now making a very belated first appearance. Even at this early stage, these two musicians show themselves to be excellent improvisers, with a few original compositions thrown into the varied mix. Reissue of hat Hut LPs E & H with much extra material. 154 minutes.

MILO FINE FREE JAZZ ENSEMBLE "Koi/Klops" (2000-1) EMANEM 4060

Since the 1970s, this band (which, in spite of its name, is a free improvisation group) has proved that there's more to Minneapolis than the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices! Multi-instrumentalist MILO FINE (who plays percussion, clarinets and piano among other things) is joined throughout the CD by long-term musical partner STEVE GNITKA (who plays amplified guitar). Excerpts from three recent concerts are heard - one featuring the duo, one a quartet with the addition of JASON SHAPIRO (piano & synthesizer) and NATHAN SMITH (double bass, guitar & bass clarinets), and one a trio with SCOTT NEWELL (tenor saxophone & voice) added. 77 minutes.

MILO FINE & VIV CORRINGHAM "Senilità" (2005) EMANEM 4132

Vocalist Viv Corringham recently moved from London to Minnesota and contacted Milo Fine. This CD contains most of their first public gig together. The first third features just the two of them, whilst the remainder has two of Fine's fine regular collaborators - electric guitarist CHARLES GILLETT and drummer DAVU SERU - added for some quartet improvising. Fine plays clarinets and marimba with electronics and a little bit of voice. An inspired new slant for all concerned. 73 minutes.

MILO FINE "Ananke" (2006/7) EMANEM 5003

Never mind the piano, the pianist is Fine! Milo Fine describes the particular piano as 'more remains than intact', yet he still manages to get the right music out of 'that wonderful beast'. The earlier date is unaccompanied piano improvised mainly at the keyboard. On the other longer concert, recorded towards the likely demise of the 'beast', Fine spends most of his time working on the innards resulting in a very wide range of sound. He also uses some electronics, and is joined by alto saxophonist JARON CHILDS and percussionist DAVU SERU in a trio set that ranges from the minimal to full-on blowing. This should appeal to those who love pianos both in and out of tune. 79 minutes.
