PAUL DUNMALL "In Your Shell Like" (2002) EMANEM 4111
This Brussels concert starts with a drone-based duo featuring Dunmall's border pipes & soprano saxophone and STEVIE WISHART's hurdy-gurdy. The second agitated duo features Dunmall's tenor saxophone with PAUL LYTTON's percussion. Then, unbelievably, all three play together and make this unlikely combination of instruments work. 58 minutes.

CLIVE BELL & SYLVIA HALLETT "The Geographers" (2004) EMANEM 4112
Following their 2004 freedom of the city festival performance (heard on EMANEM 4215), Clive Bell and Sylvia Hallett went into the studio to record some more improvisations. Bell used Cretan pipes, harmonica, khene, pi saw, shakuhaci, stereo goathorns and a whirling bat drum, while Hallett used anklung, bicycle wheel, electronics, mbira, sarangi, saw, viola, violin and voice. Between them they created a very exotic sound world. 65 minutes.

SPECIAL OFFER: GBP 7.00

ANTHONY BRAXTON & MILO FINE "Shadow Company (2004)" EMANEM 4113
Anthony Braxton invited Milo Fine to travel half way across the USA so they could make some music together for the very first time. The result was the extended free improvisation (with gaps) which is heard complete on this CD. Braxton used four saxophones, and Fine two clarinets, piano and drums. 66 minutes.

SPECIAL OFFER: GBP 7.00

ROGER SMITH & LOUIS MOHOLO-MOHOLO "The Butterfly and the Bee" (2004) EMANEM 4114
Following the success of their very first performance together at the 2004 FREEDOM OF THE CITY festival (heard on EMANEM 4215), Roger Smith and Louis Moholo-Moholo went into the studio to record some more. Their second meeting went so well that they recorded enough duo improvisations for a complete CD. The resulting music is heard complete, with Smith on Spanish guitar and Moholo on augmented drum set. 71 minutes.

SPONTANEOUS MUSIC ENSEMBLE "A New Distance" (1993-4) EMANEM 4115
Two of the last performances by the SME which then comprised JOHN STEVENS (percussion & pocket trumpet), ROGER SMITH (guitar) and JOHN BUTCHER (soprano & tenor saxophones). A new direction for the music that was sadly terminated later that year (1994) by Stevens' untimely death. Added to this reissue are two short pieces from the previous year, when NEIL METCALFE (flute) was also in the group, and some perceptive comments by Stevens. Reissue of Acta CD 8 with extra material. 63 minutes.

SPECIAL OFFER: GBP 7.00

FREE BASE "The Ins and Outs" (2003) EMANEM 4116
Free Base is ALAN WILKINSON (alto & baritone saxophones), MARCIO MATTOS (double bass & electronics) and STEVE NOBLE (drum set) - a very varied trio that includes both very fiery climaxes and becalmed moments. Although they have been in existence for a decade, this is their first appearance on record, apart from their highly praised contribution to the 2003 freedom of the city festival (heard on EMANEM 4212). 72 minutes.

SPECIAL OFFER: GBP 7.00

JOHN STEVENS QUARTET "New Cool" (1992) EMANEM 4117
As well as his pioneering work with the Spontaneous Music Ensemble, John Stevens continued to explore the jazz idiom. This group with three fine young musicians active on the London jazz scene, was one of his best as well as being one of his last. BYRON WALLEN (trumpet & flugelhorn), ED JONES (soprano & tenor saxophones), GARY CROSBY (double bass) & JOHN STEVENS (drum set) find fresh things to say in the areas associated with Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane. This CD comprises the whole of their Crawley Jazz Festival performance. Reissue of The Jazz Label TJL 006 with extra material. 78 minutes.

SPECIAL OFFER: GBP 7.00

PAUL RUTHERFORD "Neuph" (1978/80) EMANEM 4118
To make his third solo album, Rutherford went into a studio with both trombone and euphonium and used over-dubbing techniques to create unique pieces involving up to four brass instruments. The only completely solo performance features the euphonium. A couple of short tracks feature the trombone played back at double speed - one of them accompanied by a howling dog (the only other performer involved). This CD also includes two superb solo trombone improvisations recorded in Italian concerts a couple of years later. Reissue of SFA LP 092 with extra material. 70 minutes.

SPECIAL OFFER: GBP 7.00

OLAF RUPP / TONY BUCK / JOE WILLIAMSON "Weird Weapons" (2002) EMANEM 4119
Three musicians, from three different continents and three different backgrounds, happened to be living in Berlin a few years ago, and managed to make superb music together. Two extended dense improvisations by Rupp (guitar), Williamson (double bass) and Buck (percussion) without any amplification or electronics. 'I think the three of us in the trio try to achieve a kind of stillness through density and a certain degree of activity. Like the many complex colours and shadings in a pointillist painting that combine to form an impressionistic image, our playing is often very active and busy, while, in totality, creating a slowly shifting, almost three dimensional texture or soundscape.' Tony Buck. 58 minutes.

SPECIAL OFFER: GBP 7.00

BADLAND "The Society of the Spectacle" (2003) EMANEM 4120
Badland is SIMON ROSE (alto saxophone), SIMON H FELL (double bass) and STEVE NOBLE (drum set) - a very fiery free improvisation trio that includes more than a hint of free jazz. They have been in existence for a decade (with some change of personnel), and this is their third and (perhaps) best CD. 67 minutes.

SPECIAL OFFER: GBP 7.00

NEWS FROM THE SHED (1989) EMANEM 4121
Classic quintet improvising by an ad hoc grouping that quickly became a group lasting for several years. JOHN BUTCHER (tenor & soprano saxophones), PHIL DURRANT (violin & electronics), PAUL LOVENS (selected drums, cymbals & saw), RADU MALFATTI (trombone, zither & accessories), JOHN RUSSELL (acoustic guitar). Reissue of Acta LP 4 with extra material. 63 minutes.

An overview of the Brussels improvising scene featuring members of Collectif Inaudible. 12 duo, trio and quartet improvisations by: ROALD BAUDOUX (electroacoustics), JOSÉ BEDEUR (cello), JEAN DEMEY (bass clarinet & double bass), JEAN-JACQUES DUERINCKX (baritone & sopranino saxophones), LÉON LAFFUT (piano), NICOLE LEGROS (voice), JAN HUIB NAS (acoustic guitars & banjo), MARA PIGEON (voice), PAT RISKÉ (percussion), FABRIZIO ROTA (synthesizer), ADELHEID SIEUW (flutes), GUY STRALE (piano, clarinet, percussion, etc) and JEAN-MICHEL VAN SCHOUWBURG (voice) - plus guests JIM DENLEY (flutes) and NICOLAS ROMBOUTS (double bass). 73 minutes.

SPECIAL OFFER: GBP 4.00

ROLAND RAMANAN "Caesura" (2003) EMANEM 4123
This second CD is looser and veers more towards Free Improvisation than the first SHAKEN. Once again, trumpeter Ramanan (who doubles on wooden flutes) is with MARCIO MATTOS (cello & electronics), SIMON H FELL (double bass) and MARK SANDERS (percussion). One of the eight tracks is a bass solo, and another a string duet. 62 minutes.

SPECIAL OFFER: GBP 7.00

MALCOLM GOLDSTEIN & MASASHI HARADA "Soil" (2002) EMANEM 4124
14 improvisations by Goldstein on violin and Harada on piano (and voice). Another successful attempt to overcome the inherent incompatibilities of these two instruments, that sounds somewhat unlike all previous attempts. 61 minutes.

TERRY DAY "Interruptions" (1978-1981) EMANEM 4125
Before ill health curtailed much of his activity in the late 1980s, Terry Day was a compelling force on a wide variety of instruments, as can be heard on these 29 solo improvisations and multi-tracks performed on piano, keyboards, alto & soprano saxophones, bamboo pipes, drums, percussion, cello, mandolin, home made instruments, balloons, toys, African thumb piano, voice, Chinese flutes, plastic trumpet, and a Michel Waisvisz crackle box. (There are also cameo appearances by Peter Cusack and Davey Payne on 3 punk rock songs.) 77 minutes - previously unissued.

SPECIAL OFFER: GBP 7.00

"Supermodel Supermodel" (2002-3) EMANEM 4126
GAIL BRAND (trombone), TIM PERKIS (laptop), GINO ROBAIR (percussion, etc), JOHN SHIURBA (electric guitar) MATTHEW SPERRY (double bass, etc). 13 pieces recorded during three visits that Gail Brand made to the San Francisco area. Duo, trio, quartet and quintet free improvisations. As Gino Robair says: "The music on this CD is an excellent example of what I like most about free improvisation: that musicians can meet for the first time and, without much more than a simple introduction, make exciting and unusual music." 71 minutes.

SPECIAL OFFER: GBP 7.00

HOWARD RILEY "Two is One" (2005) EMANEM 4127
For his first overdubbed piano recording in 25 years, Riley recorded one part as if he were playing a solo, then immediately overdubbed a second part while the first was still fresh in his mind. The end result is nine duo improvisations, plus a jazz tribute to Monk. 62 minutes.

SPECIAL OFFER: GBP 7.00

ROSS BOLLETER "Secret Sandhills and satellites" (2001-5) EMANEM 4128
Pieces for ruined pianos and pianos on the edge of ruin. For several years now, Ross Bolleter has been scouring around Western Australia and beyond looking for ruined pianos. He has found the right music for each instrument, and performed and recorded it. This collection contains some recent choice items recorded around Perth and Alice Springs. The main work, inspired by an Aborigine painting, is the 28-minute Secret Sandhills, a generally slow-moving work spliced together from performances on six ruins. There are also 10 shorter and generally faster Satellites, some of which were performed on two ruined pianos simultaneously. Fresh new sounds from decaying old instruments. 68 minutes.

SPECIAL OFFER: GBP 7.00

MICHAEL KEITH / JOHN OSWALD / ROGER TURNER "Number Nine" (2005) EMANEM 4129
Two Toronto musicians and a visitor from London formed this trio that has worked on both sides of the Atlantic. Group improvisations on acoustic guitar, alto saxophone and percussion that cover the whole gamut from dense high-energy to sparse interactions. 51 minutes.

SPECIAL OFFER: GBP 4.00

KENT CARTER STRING TRIO "Intersections" (2004/5) EMANEM 4130
KENT CARTER's current String Trio, with ALBRECHT MAURER on violin, KATRIN MICKIEWICZ on viola and the leader on double bass, somehow manages to sound like a classical chamber trio, a jazz group, a European folk band, and a free improvising group simultaneously, whilst sounding totally natural and unlaboured. Their unique niche features magnificent improvisations framed by strong compositions contributed by all three musicians, plus some collective creations. A worthy follow up to THE WILLISAU SUITES from 1984. 69 minutes.

SPECIAL OFFER: GBP 7.00

ROSWELL RUDD "Blown Bone" (1976) EMANEM 4131
Previously only available on a very rare 1979 Japanese LP, these two jazz sessions feature Rudd as a fine composer/arranger and organiser of unlikely-looking line-ups, as well as an exceptional trombonist. The CD opens with Rudd, ENRICO RAVA (trumpet), STEVE LACY (soprano sax), WILBUR LITTLE (bass) and PAUL MOTIAN (drums) all showing themselves to be in good form. Then SHEILA JORDAN (voice) joins them for some timely environmental protest. The other session (from the previous day) has KENNY DAVERN (clarinet), TYRONE WASHINGTON (tenor sax) and PATTI BOWN (electric piano) added to Rudd, Lacy, Little and Motian to perform Rudd's 'Blown Bone Suite'. This includes an urban blues featuring bluesman LOUISIANA RED, and a Latin number on which Washington and Davern excel. There's also a short previously unissued interlude from 1967 featuring saxophonist ROBIN KENYATTA with Rudd on piano. Reissue of Philips RJ-7490 with extra material. 51 minutes.

MILO FINE & VIV CORRINGHAM "Senilità" (2005) EMANEM 4132
Vocalist Viv Corringham recently moved from London to Minnesota and contacted Milo Fine. This CD contains most of their first public gig together. The first third features just the two of them, whilst the remainder has two of Fine's fine regular collaborators - electric guitarist CHARLES GILLETT and drummer DAVU SERU - added for some quartet improvising. Fine plays clarinets and marimba with electronics and a little bit of voice. An inspired new slant for all concerned. 73 minutes.

SPECIAL OFFER: GBP 7.00

ELLIOTT SHARP & REINHOLD FRIEDL "Feuchtify" (2001) EMANEM 4133
A sequence of 13 improvised duets featuring Sharp on soprano sax, dobro, electric fretless guitar, 8-string guitarbass and computer, and Friedl playing inside piano and prepared piano. The results are more instrumental, less electronic than on their previous duo album - ANOSTALGIA on Grob. 70 minutes.
