ANTHONY BRAXTON & MILO FINE "Shadow Company (2004)"
EMANEM 4113
Anthony Braxton invited Milo Fine to travel half way across the USA so they could
make some music together for the very first time. The result was the extended free
improvisation (with gaps) which is heard complete on this CD. Braxton used four
saxophones, and Fine two clarinets, piano and drums. 66 minutes.
ROGER SMITH & LOUIS MOHOLO-MOHOLO "The Butterfly and the Bee"
(2004) EMANEM 4114
Following the success of their very first performance together at the 2004 FREEDOM
OF THE CITY festival (heard on EMANEM 4215), Roger Smith
and Louis Moholo-Moholo went into the studio to record some more. Their second
meeting went so well that they recorded enough duo improvisations for a complete
CD. The resulting music is heard complete, with Smith on Spanish guitar and Moholo
on augmented drum set. 71 minutes.
SPONTANEOUS MUSIC ENSEMBLE "A New Distance" (1993-4) EMANEM 4115
Two of the last performances by the SME which then comprised
FREE BASE "The Ins and Outs" (2003) EMANEM 4116

JOHN STEVENS QUARTET "New Cool" (1992) EMANEM 4117
As well as his pioneering work with the Spontaneous Music Ensemble, John Stevens
continued to explore the jazz idiom. This group with three fine young musicians
active on the London jazz scene, was one of his best as well as being one of his
last.
PAUL RUTHERFORD "Neuph" (1978/80) EMANEM 4118
To make his third solo album, Rutherford went into a studio with both trombone and
euphonium and used over-dubbing techniques to create unique pieces involving up
to four brass instruments. The only completely solo performance features the euphonium.
A couple of short tracks feature the trombone played back at double speed - one
of them accompanied by a howling dog (the only other performer involved). This CD
also includes two superb solo trombone improvisations recorded in Italian concerts
a couple of years later.
Reissue of SFA LP 092 with extra material. 70 minutes.
OLAF RUPP / TONY BUCK / JOE WILLIAMSON "Weird Weapons" (2002)
EMANEM 4119
Three musicians, from three different continents and three different backgrounds,
happened to be living in Berlin a few years ago, and managed to make superb music
together. Two extended dense improvisations by Rupp (guitar), Williamson (double
bass) and Buck (percussion) without any amplification or electronics. 'I think the
three of us in the trio try to achieve a kind of stillness through density and a
certain degree of activity. Like the many complex colours and shadings in a pointillist
painting that combine to form an impressionistic image, our playing is often very
active and busy, while, in totality, creating a slowly shifting, almost three dimensional
texture or soundscape.' Tony Buck.
58 minutes.
BADLAND "The Society of the Spectacle" (2003) EMANEM 4120
Badland is
NEWS FROM THE SHED (1989) EMANEM 4121
Classic quintet improvising by an ad hoc grouping that quickly became a group
lasting for several years.
COLLECTIF INAUDIBLE "Cardo" (2001-5) EMANEM 4122
An overview of the Brussels improvising scene featuring members of Collectif Inaudible.
12 duo, trio and quartet improvisations by:
ROLAND RAMANAN "Caesura" (2003) EMANEM 4123
This second CD is looser and veers more towards Free Improvisation than the first
SHAKEN. Once again, trumpeter Ramanan (who doubles
on wooden flutes) is with MARCIO MATTOS (cello & electronics), SIMON H FELL
(double bass) and MARK SANDERS (percussion). One of the eight tracks is a bass solo,
and another a string duet.
62 minutes.
MALCOLM GOLDSTEIN & MASASHI HARADA "Soil" (2002) EMANEM 4124
14 improvisations by Goldstein on violin and Harada on piano (and voice). Another
successful attempt to overcome the inherent incompatibilities of these two instruments,
that sounds somewhat unlike all previous attempts.
61 minutes.
TERRY DAY "Interruptions" (1978-1981) EMANEM 4125
Before ill health curtailed much of his activity in the late 1980s, Terry Day was
a compelling force on a wide variety of instruments as can be heard on these 29 solo
improvisations and multi-tracks performed on piano, keyboards, alto & soprano
saxophones, bamboo pipes, drums, percussion, cello, mandolin, home made instruments,
balloons, toys, African thumb piano, voice, Chinese flutes, plastic trumpet, and
a Michel Waisvisz crackle box. (There are also cameo appearances by Peter Cusack
and Davey Payne on 3 punk rock songs.) 77 minutes - previously unissued.
"Supermodel Supermodel" (2002-3) EMANEM 4126
GAIL BRAND (trombone), TIM PERKIS (laptop), GINO ROBAIR (percussion, etc), JOHN
SHIURBA (electric guitar) MATTHEW SPERRY (double bass, etc). 13 pieces recorded
during three visits that Gail Brand made to the San Francisco area. Duo, trio,
quartet and quintet free improvisations. As Gino Robair says: "The music on
this CD is an excellent example of what I like most about free improvisation: that
musicians can meet for the first time and, without much more than a simple introduction,
make exciting and unusual music." 71 minutes.
HOWARD RILEY "Two is One" (2005) EMANEM 4127
For his first overdubbed piano recording in 25 years, Riley recorded one part as
if he were playing a solo, then immediately overdubbed a second part while the first
was still fresh in his mind. The end result is nine duo improvisations, plus a jazz
tribute to Monk. 62 minutes.
ROSS BOLLETER "Secret Sandhills and satellites" (2001-5)
EMANEM 4128
Pieces for ruined pianos and pianos on the edge of ruin. For several years now,
Ross Bolleter has been scouring around Western Australia and beyond looking for
ruined pianos. He has found the right music for each instrument, and performed
and recorded it. This collection contains some recent choice items recorded around
Perth and Alice Springs. The main work, inspired by an Aborigine painting, is the
28-minute Secret Sandhills, a generally slow-moving work spliced together
from performances on six ruins. There are also 10 shorter and generally faster
Satellites, some of which were performed on two ruined pianos simultaneously.
Fresh new sounds from decaying old instruments. 68 minutes.
